BJUR

REDON’S HEADQUARTERS, PLANET ORGDA

Baymond lay awake, gazing at Fawn in the moonlight. He didn’t know what to make of her story. He’d entered her mind and knew she spoke what she thought to be true, but how could he doubt his memories? Yet she knew about his scars, whereas he had no memory of them.

His thoughts turned to Bjur, if her story was true the boy would know him.

At dawn, he quietly got out of bed trying not to disturb Fawn, then dressed and left the room. He ordered the two bodyguards on duty to protect Fawn, then went to the slave quarters.

Though it was early the slaves were already up and working. When he walked in a hush fell over the room and the slaves bowed to him. “Rise. I’m looking for a child named Bjur.”

“The children’s names are taken away when they arrive here. How old is he?” an older woman asked.

“Two and he’s of my race.”

“I’ll take you to the room where the younger children sleep.” He followed her down the hall and through the slave’s living quarters. The foul smell and filthy conditions they lived in appalled him. A Starlean woman asked for his blessing. He took her hand, focusing on her inwardly and the words she needed to hear came to him. “Your life is in God’s hands. Never be deceived into thinking that you are your body or somehow less than other people because you are a slave. You are Soul and equal to any other Soul.” He touched his thumb to her forehead, opening her spiritual vision, and heard a humming sound in his inner ears. The sound was with him most of the time and sometimes it was so loud he couldn’t hear what people were saying to him. He didn’t know what made the sound but he felt a great sense of peace when he heard it. Others gathered for a blessing, crowding around him and preventing him from going to the children’s room.

They all wanted to touch him and be near him. The older woman assisting him finally sent them off and led him into a room with a row of beds along two opposite walls. The children were in the process of rising. He was drawn toward the area where the younger boys were sleeping.

The older woman took him over to the person in charge.

“Are there any white-skinned boys here who arrived with the Starlean children?” Baymond asked, his heart pounding. “A child who cries for his mother?”

“They all cry for their mothers.” She clapped her hands. “Boys, get out of bed and line up.” Sleepy little boys got out of bed and quickly formed a line. They trembled and most looked at the floor. He wondered how they were punished when they didn’t do as they were ordered.

“Do any of you know me?” Baymond asked, looking over the children who were of many different races. Several of them said no and the rest remained silent. Baymond looked at the woman.
